The Boone Central/Newman Grove Lady Cardinals remained above .500 this past weekend by splitting contests against Mid-State Conference foes O’Neill and Wayne.
BC/NG will play twice again this coming weekend, traveling to Madison Friday night and hosting Guardian Angels Central Catholic Saturday at Newman Grove.
BC/NG 44, O’Neill 39
Despite frigid shooting, Boone Central/Newman Grove rallied from a first-quarter deficit to edge visiting O’Neill 44-39 Friday in Albion.
After trailing 23-22 at halftime, the Lady Cards held O’Neill to just 16 second-half points and received an offensive spark with three-point baskets by Jade Gottier, Melissa Kyncl and Shannon Stuhlmiller.
“To shoot 27 percent from the field and 38 percent from the free throw line and still win indicates what a great defensive effort we gave,” praised Coach Mike Kennedy. “We defended intelligently, kept O’Neill off the free throw line, and held them to only five offensive rebounds.
Wayne 47, BC/NG
Again struggling on the offensive end, Boone Central/Newman Grove saw a late rally fall short Saturday at Wayne and dropped a 47-39 decision to the Blue Devils.
The Lady Cardinals scored 17 points in the third period, after totaling just 14 the entire first half, and had several chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 12 points. BC/NG came up empty on two straight possessions, however, and Wayne secured the victory with a final run.
“Early turnovers against full-court defense and tentative offense in the first half forced us to play from behind all night,” said Kennedy.
