An individual first and a team best. All in all, a successful weekend for the Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling team.
Led by junior Skyler Weber, who won his first varsity tournament title, the Cardinals placed a season-best fourth in the 2013 Gibbon Bill Foster Invite Saturday. BC/NG finished a scant point in front of Southern Valley (164) and just three behind Ord (168). Host Gibbon edged Wood River for the meet championship.
Coach Dale Bonge was pleased with his team’s performance while noting further improvement is still needed.
“One champ, 14 medalists and a fourth-place team finish is our best showing of the year,” Bonge commented. “While that is all well and good, we aren’t completely pleased, as we did falter in a few areas and need to continue to improve as we head into the final month of the season.
“Skyler earned his first career varsity title. In the finals he made short work of his opponent with a pin in just 42 seconds. A tight 2-0 quarterfinal decision and a semi-final pin propelled Steven Arreguin to his first varsity finals where he lost to the #4 rated wrestler in Class C.
“For their performances, Skyler and Steven are our ‘Wrestlers of the Meet.’
“Dakota Ruhnke and Jacob Olson both placed third. Dakota, who for the second straight week had arguably the toughest weight class of the meet, went 4-1, including a win over a rated guy. Jacob earned his highest varsity medal with a pin in his last match.”
Cardinals placing fourth were Parker Wallin, Cody Shanno, Billy O’Brien and Brock Donelson. Sammy Stopak, Jake Ritterbush and Jackson Meyer all placed fifth, while Nolan Wondercheck, Mark O’Brien and Jacob Krings finished sixth.
