Keystone XL risk low, says State Department

A U.S. State Department draft report last Friday concluded there is little environmental risk from the Keystone XL oil pipeline project.
The proposed pipeline, which is now routed through Antelope, Boone and Nance counties, would carry tar sands oil from Canada to refineries on the Texas gulf coast.
Nebraska’s environmental analysis of the revised pipeline route was the subject of a lengthy public hearing in Albion last December. That report has since been approved by Gov. Dave Heineman.
The State Department’s report said Keystone XL likely wouldn’t have a big impact on the rate of extraction of tar sands oil in Canada or demand for heavy crude oil at U.S. refineries.
Details in the March 6 Albion News and Petersburg Press Print & Electronic Editions.
