Card track, field teams vie in tough Blue Devil Invite

A devil of a meet.
Facing some very difficult early-season competition, the Boone Central/Newman Grove track & field teams stepped up with solid performances in the Blue Devil Invite at Wayne Tuesday, April 2.
The Lady Cardinals placed fourth in a tough eight-team field and the BC/NG boys finished fifth in team standings.

Individually, a pair of young Cards shined brightly. Sophomore Olivia Slizoski won the 300 meter low hurdles in a time of 49.0. Freshman Sheldon Beierman captured first place in the 100 meter high hurdles in 16.1, and also placed fourth in the 300 lows (50.3).
Although the Boone Central/Newman Grove girls’ 4×800 meter relay team just missed gold medals, placing runners-up to Scotus, the quartet of Beierman, Catherine Weeder, Jade Gottier and Hannah Schmitz recorded a new Boone Central school record time of 10:27.6 (also #6 on the all-time Albion/Boone Central record chart).
Three athletes also posted marks that rank high on the all-time charts. Beierman is now #3 in the 100 highs, Slizoski #3 in the 300 lows, and Dana Pelster #2 in the pole vault (8’9).
All in all, it was a day that pleased Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel.
“This was a very competitive meet with some great performances and our kids really stepped up to the challenge,” Pestel praised. “We had several athletes who competed at a very high level. They were willing to push themselves harder than they had up to this point in the season and had some very positive results.
“We still have work to do in the areas of technique and conditioning, but overall, as coaches, we were quite pleased with the results of both the boys and girls in this meet.”
