The Boone Central/Newman Grove track & field teams concluded their regular-season schedules by hosting the annual Jerry Seier Memorial Quad at the Albion athletic field Tuesday, April 30.
Although the meet was small in size, there was ample competition in a field that included Scotus and Lakeview opponents that BC/NG will face in this week’s B-4 District meet.
Strong Scotus squads won both the girls and boys divisions of the Seier Memorial. The Shamrock boys scored 123 points to easily outpace runner-up Boone Central/Newman Grove (73) and the Scotus girls tallied 126 points, again well ahead of the second-place Cardinals (82.5).
Although falling short in the team races, Boone Central/Newman Grove athletes took advantage of good weather and stiff competition in their final district tune-up and established a number of season-best marks.
Freshman Sheldon Beierman shaved a few fractions off her Boone Central school record time in the 100 meter high hurdles (15.5), while freshman Hannah Schmitz dropped her Albion News area-best time in the 3200 meters by five full seconds (5:52.5) while posting a victory Tuesday.
Senior Nick Paulson set an area-best time in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles (41.9) and the Cardinal 4×400 relay team of Bill O’Brien, Joe Brugger, Logan Olson and Trevor Salber lowered its News area-best clocking (3:42.5).
Along with winning the 100 highs, Beierman also took first place in the 300 low hurdles in 48.3. Card sophomore Catherine Weeder had a strong day with wins in the triple jump (32’8¼) and high jump (4’11) and a second-place finish in the 800 meter run. Sophomore Olivia Slizoski was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (49.0) and soph Dana Pelster took second in the 200 meter dash (27.4), matching her area-best time. Pelster also lowered the area-best time in the 100 (13.0) while placing third.
The Lady Cardinal 4×400 relay (Beierman, Jade Gottier, Ashlynn Baker, Weeder) won with a 4:15.6 clocking.
In the boys division, Paulson swept the hurdle events, adding a win in the 100 highs (15.4) to his 300 intermediate performance. Senior Calvin Koziol, after a slow season start due to injury, continued to round into form with a strong victory in the 1600 meter run (4:57.8) and junior Derek Gentrup matched the News area-best of 6’ while winning the high jump.
Sophomore Andrew Rasmussen was runner-up in the 1600 (5:05.9) and 3200 (11:08.7), senior Logan Olson placed second in the long jump (19’11½) and sophomore Matt Brugger ran second in the 800 (2:08.7).
