Albion’s 18 & under softball team opened the 2013 season by splitting a pair of games in the final week of May.
Albion opened the campaign by blasting host Madison 21-1 in three innings May 28.
The 18-unders scored more than enough runs in their first at-bat, taking a 15-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Gina Nelson got the onslaught started by driving in Terri Molt with a base hit and, two batters later, Maria Glidden plated two more runs with a single. Molt (2), Nelson (2), Shannon Stuhlmiller (2), Glidden (2), Kelsey Lee (2), Miranda Ketteler (2), Becca Reicks, Abby Ervin and Kylie Finnegan all scored in the opening frame. Nelson and Stuhlmiller also had two-run singles for Albion.
Albion added five more runs in the second inning, getting RBI base hits by Glidden and Bridget Krings and another two-run single from Nelson.
Finnegan and Brianna Brugman handled pitching duties for the 18-unders, limiting Madison to one hit, three baserunners and a single run.
Albion hosted O’Neill May 30 and came out on the short end of a 12-7 score in five innings.
The visitors got a quick start in the contest, scoring twice in the first inning, four times in the second, and adding five runs in the third to lead 11-0.
Albion got its first run in the bottom of the third when Reicks singled home Molt and the locals staged a rally in the fourth. Nelson scored on a passed ball after leading off with a walk and Finnegan singled home Glidden to start the inning. Another walk, an O’Neill error, two sacrifices and a batter hit-by-pitch pulled the 18-unders to within 11-6.
O’Neill added a final run in the top of the fifth, then secured the victory by holding Albion to a single run in the bottom of the frame.
