After dropping a pair of hard-fought, low-scoring affairs to Twin River at Genoa June 3, Albion’s 18 & Under softball team rebounded to post three straight road victories at Atkinson and Neligh last week.
The week began with run-scoring frustration at Genoa as Twin River notched 3-2 and 2-1 victories over Albion.
It appeared the Albion 18-Unders might have a victory in hand vs. Twin River, taking a 2-0 lead through four innings of play.
Gina Nelson walked, stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to give Albion a 1-0 lead in the first. Albion went up 2-0 in the fourth when Maria Glidden singled, stole second and came home on two passed balls.
Albion could not get untracked at the plate in the second contest and lost a 2-1 decision despite another stellar pitching effort, this time by Nelson.
Twin River scored a first-inning run with a pair of base hits and added a second with an RBI triple in the fourth for a 2-0 lead through five. Taking advantage of two Twin River errors, Albion scored its only run in the sixth and had additional runners at first and third before the hosts induced a final ground ball out.
Runs weren’t a problem at Atkinson Tuesday as Albion bounced back to post a 13-5 victory.
Bridget Krings got scoring started with an RBI single in the second inning. Shannon Stuhlmiller rapped a two-run double and Glidden drove in two more with a single as Albion took a 6-0 lead.
Leading 7-4, the Albion 18-Unders capped the win with six runs in the sixth. Miranda Ketteler smacked a one-out double and scored on Niki Mewhirter’s RBI base hit. Shauna Osborn, Terri Molt and Glidden also had RBI hits in the frame.
Albion continued its success, improving to 4-3 with a pair of dominant wins at Neligh Thursday.
Finnegan paced an 11-0 victory by blanking the hosts on a single hit over four innings. She struck out four.
Albion got off to a strong start and scored multiple runs in each of its three at-bats.
Stuhlmiller drove in Molt for the first run of the game and Nelson, Glidden and Krings also registered RBI’s in a four-run first inning. Stuhlmiller’s two-run double keyed a four-run second and she drove in two more in the third with a triple.
Mewhirter provided another strong pitching performance as Albion added a 12-1 victory over Neligh. Mewhirter gave up just two hits and struck out four.
After a scoreless first, Albion broke through with four runs in the second. Mewhirter cracked a two-run double and Brianna Brugman added an RBI with a sacrifice.
Glidden tripled and scored on Ketteler’s double in the third and Albion went ahead 9-0 in the fourth as Stuhlmiller doubled home two runs. Stuhlmiller and Nelson helped wrap up the decision with RBI base hits in the fifth and final inning.
