The Albion Cornerstone Legion Seniors halted their second four-game losing streak of the season with a 12-3 victory over Osceola Sunday. Unfortunately, in an attempt to build momentum for the upcoming area tournament, Albion fell short Monday in a 5-2 loss to PWGS.
Albion Cornerstone is the #4 seed in the American Legion Class B Area 5 Tournament that begings Thursday in Aurora.
After dropping games to Gretna and Millard Sox Gold the previous week, Albion Cornerstone’s skid continued July 9 with a 4-3 heartbreaker against St. Paul at Leon Nelson Memorial Field.
Cornerstone fought back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the contest in the sixth inning, but the visitors spoiled the rally by plating the game-winner in the top of the seventh and final frame.
Tough times continued June 10 when visiting Sutton exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning, turning a nailbiter into a 10-3 win.
Sutton struck against Albion starter Hedlund in the fifth, getting a two-run single by Max Olson and RBI hit from Derek Bailey to lead 3-1. Cornerstone closed the gap to one in the bottom of the sixth when Cole Luettel singled and scored on Rasmussen’s base hit.
That set the stage for a disastrous top of the seventh for the hosts.
Cornerstone got back on the winning track Sunday with a much-needed 12-3 victory at Osceola. Albion’s bats pounded out 21 hits, giving Koch more than enough support for the win.
Koch was solid throughout his seven-inning performance, allowing only single runs in the third, fourth and sixth. He stranded a baserunner at third in the first inning, at second and third in the third and again at third in the fourth.
For the third straight game Albion Cornerstone took the early lead Monday night at Leon Nelson Memorial Field, but PWGS used a four-run fourth inning to rally for a 5-2 victory in the regular season finale.
PWGS parlayed three singles, two Albion errors and a batter hit-by-pitch into four runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead and added an insurance run in the top of the seventh with Jared Kuta’s RBI double.
