Just when it appeared Boone Central had a comfortable margin and would cruise to its first victory of the 2013 season Saturday morning, the Cardinals found themselves hanging on by their fingernails.
Hang on they did, as Boone Central finally stopped a five-run Madison/Humphrey rally and edged the Dragons 8-7 in a game halted by time limit after the top of the sixth inning in the opening round of the Boone Central Invite.
“The girls played well, stringing runs together when we needed them and digging deep to hold on for the win,” praised Coach Cassie Olson.
Boone Central grabbed a 4-2 lead with a three-run second inning against Pierce in its second tourney game, but could not hold on to the lead in a 7-4 loss.
“Our base-running errors really hurt us during this game – we left a lot of girls on base,” Olson noted.
The Cardinals finished play Saturday with an 11-3 loss to Cross County/High Plains. The Cougars broke the game open with a six-run third inning.
