The Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals not only opened the 2013 volleyball season with a 3-0 victory over visiting O’Neill Thursday, Sept. 5, the BC/NG JV and 9th/10th grade teams also scored wins without dropping a game.
It was a start that left Coach Susan Roberts pleased.

“We were really happy with our performance at all three levels vs. O’Neill,” Roberts praised. “All three teams were very aggressive from the serving line, all tallying 15 aces in their respective matches.
“This really kept O’Neill out of system and left them struggling to get their offense organized.”
The Cardinal varsity fell behind early while making several service errors, but chipped away at the Eagle lead until evening the score at 11-11. As its aggressive serving became more accurate, BC/NG pulled away to win 25-20, then dominated the second game (25-8). The Cards were a bit more inconsistent in the third game after racing to an early lead, but held off a last-ditch O’Neill rally attempt to close out a 25-21 decision.
“We serve-received very well. Our team did not get aced all night and that is difficult to do,” Roberts noted. “We really moved our feet well and did a good job keeping the ball in play, giving ourselves a chance to run our offense.
“I felt like all three teams were aggressive with our offensive opportunities. The varsity hit .163 and had 32 kills.”
