Running is a natural progression of moving forward, one stride at a time.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove cross country teams are showing that same type of progression in each meet of the young 2013 season.
The Cardinals took another stride forward this past week, placing runner-up in the girls and boys divisions of the Scotus Invitational at Columbus.
While the host Shamrocks took advantage of the familiarity of their home course to handily win both divisions Thursday, Sept. 19, BC/NG was impressive, edging Wayne in the girls race and finishing comfortably in front of the Blue Devils in the boys competition.
“Conditions were really ripe for fast races and the kids were ready to respond,” said veteran Card Coach Tom Dickey. “We had wholescale personal bests on the boys side and the girls all ran great races in their first season running the 5K distance.
“Our leadership was pretty impressive – both Catherine Weeder and Trevor Salber ran great races to put the teams in good position.”
Weeder led the Lady Cards by placing fourth in 20:30. Three additional BC/NG runners – Sheldon Beierman (12th), Kendra Gonzalez (15th) and Christina Stopak (17th) – all finished in the Top 20.
Salber paced the Cardinal boys, placing seventh in a personal-best time of 18:04. The boys also had three additional runners in the Top 20 – Andrew Rasmussen (14th), Jackson Meyer (16th) and Cody Shanno (17th). Rasmussen and Meyer both posted personal-best times.
