Wind farms generate revenue in Boone County

Boone County and its various governmental subdivisions have been receiving revenues over the past three years from the “nameplate capacity tax” on wind farms within the county.
Since the first wind farm, Laredo Ridge, came on line in 2011, various taxing entities have received nearly $750,000 from the county’s two wind farms.
The nameplate capacity tax, which became effective in July of 2010, replaced conventional property tax on wind farms with a flat tax based on each megawatt of production capacity represented by the wind farm generators.
The annual tax rate is $3,518 per megawatt.
