BC golfers C-3 District runner-up, return to state

Although Boone Central couldn’t quite overcome season-long nemesis Columbus Scotus, the Cardinals were a strong runner-up in the C-3 District Tournament Tuesday, Oct. 8, and qualified for a return trip to this week’s Nebraska Class C Girls State Golf Tournament.
Led by individual gold medalist Melissa Kyncl, Boone Central fashioned a 410 team score on an extremely windy day at Centura Hills Golf Course, trailing only Scotus (393) in the final standings. O’Neill (St. Mary’s) was third at 423, also qualifying for the Class C state tournament Oct. 14-15 at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.

With players battling gusting winds throughout the competition, no golfer was able to finish in the 80s on Centura’s 18-hole layout. Kyncl grabbed top honors with an even 90 – shooting 45/45 and finishing two strokes ahead of Lakeview’s Kelsey Bignell (92). Amy Price of Scotus, who went out in 44 on the front nine, faded to a 49 on the back side and placed third at 93.
Boone Central had a second Top 10 medalist, with Jessica Tisthammer carding a 104 for 10th. Faith Leetch just missed medaling, finishing 13th at 106. Kyley Sorell completed the team score with a 110, good for 19th, and Paige Krohn shot 128.
