Boone Central closed out a 4-24 softball season by winning one game in the C-5 District Tournament at St. Paul Thursday, Oct. 10.
The Cardinals opened the tournament with an 11-1 loss to #3 seed Pierce in four innings. Becca Reicks drove in Ashlynn Baker in the top of the first inning, but Boone Central was stymied at the plate for the remainder of the contest. Kylie Finnegan took the loss, allowing nine earned runs.
Despite the tough season, the Cardinals showed they still had fight in the loser’s bracket Thursday. BC bounced back from its opening loss to defeat Madison/Humphrey 13-5.
“After a very sluggish start, I was extremely pleased to see the Cardinals wake up and play amazing ball!” Coach Cassie Olson stated. “The bats were on fire and the defense backed up Ashlynn, who did great on the mound. The girls made goals and certainly met them during this round.
“I was very proud.”
Boone Central saw its season come to an end with a competitive 8-5 loss to Central City. The Cardinals took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Central City rallied with four in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the sixth. BC made a valiant effort with two runs in the seventh, but could not complete the comeback.
“We may not have gotten the last win of the day, but this game was, in my opinion, a good note to end the season on,” Olson said. “The team played its best on both sides of the ball and showed they were not going down without a fight.
“This group of girls has a lot of heart and you can’t teach or measure the worth of that!”
