#1 Cards roll to 7-0

Matt Brugger - Cardinal TD#1 vs. #3? Really?
In a highly-anticipated Class C1 grid match-up in Albion Friday night, top-ranked Boone Central/Newman Grove secured the C1-5 District championship by shellacking Columbus Lakeview 48-21.
The Cardinals’ performance was actually even more impressive than the final score, as BC/NG forced the running clock rule (35 point lead) in the second half and enjoyed a 48-0 advantage with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter.

For the second straight season Lakeview entered the pivotal C1-5 contest with a high-scoring offense built around a bevy of speedy skill-position playmakers.
And, for the second straight season, Boone Central/Newman Grove pummeled the Vikings at the line of scrimmage to dominate play and hold those playmakers in check.
“We felt like our linemen would be capable of taking over the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball – and that was the case,” said Cardinal Coach Arnie Johnson. “On just about every play offensively and defensively, we were able to play on their side of the ball due to our line surge.
“It’s nice to know we can do a number of things to move the ball. And, our defense did a fantastic job of limiting Lakeview’s big-play potential.”

One more note, in terms of BC/NG’s dominance Friday. The Cardinals achieved the 27-point victory over C1’s 3rd-ranked team with two potential all-state candidates – Derek Gentrup and Tyler Hedlund – on crutches, watching from the sideline.
Impressive, indeed.
