The Boone Central girls golf team concluded a banner 2013 season by placing 8th in the Nebraska Class C State Golf Championships at Columbus’ Quail Run Golf Course Tuesday, Oct. 15.
Due to cold temperatures and heavy rain Monday, the state tournament was shortened to a one-day, 18-hole event. Tuesday’s weather was far from optimal, but at least dry, for the 15 teams chasing the team championship.
Minden nipped Columbus Scotus and G.I. Central Catholic by one stroke during a playoff after all three teams shot 406 in the regulation 18 holes.
Boone Central struggled to one of its toughest days of the season, recording a 433 team total. For the first time in 2013, no Cardinals were among the individual medalists.
“It was just very miserable, 45 degrees and 30-40 mile-per-hour wind gusts,” noted Boone Central Coach Dennis Walters. “Tough to play your best in those conditions, with several layers of clothes on.”
Senior Faith Leetch led Boone Central, tieing for 18th with an 18-hole score of 100. Junior Melissa Kyncl tied for 23rd at 102.
