The O’Neill Invite Saturday turned into a championship duel between the Class C #1 host Eagles and #3 Valentine.
Although Boone Central/Newman Grove could not challenge that pair, the Cardinals impressively outdistanced the other nine teams in the meet to bring home third place.
O’Neill claimed their tournament title with 228.5 points, Valentine finishing at 207.5. BC/NG, with three individual runners-up, scored 120.5, well in front of fourth-place Chamberlain, SD (88).
“O’Neill and Valentine showed why they are rated #1 and #3 in Class C,” acknowledged Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “Our young men showed a lot of heart after a poor start, battling back to garner third by over 30 points.
“Joel (Meyer) got us off to a good start with a pin, but things went south after that, as we could not get a win in the rest of the first two rounds, going 1-9.
“After that, these young men stepped up and fought tooth and nail for the rest of the day. The coaching staff is proud of the effort and determination demonstrated by the team the rest of the way.”
Nolan Wondercheck, Cody Shanno and Isaac Sullivan all placed second to lead the Cardinals. Jackson Meyer rebounded from a loss to defending state medalist Eklund of Valentine to place third with a pin and major decision.
Scott Joe, Ethan Wilke and Jacob Krings brought home fourth-place medals for BC/NG with identical 3-2 records.
