Cards wrestlers host duals

Jackson MeyerThe Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling team earned third place against some tough competition in the Boone Central Duals Saturday in Albion.
Powerful Battle Creek swept to the championship with a 5-0 record, winning by an average score of 54.8-17.8. Wood River edged BC/NG 42-36 in the opening round and placed second at 4-1. The Cardinals went 3-2 for third, followed by Norfolk Catholic, Omaha South and Boys Town.

“Another good effort by our wrestlers. We earned third while being open in four weight classes, as Steven Arreguin was unable to compete due to injury,” said Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “With Steven in the line-up, I like our chances at getting second. His points could have made the difference in the Wood River match.”

Saturday’s performance came on the heels of a 48-27 dual loss to York Thursday at Newman Grove that Bonge was pleased with despite the score.
“We saw definite improvement from our previous outings. All of our guys fought tooth and nail,” he praised. “In matches contested, we won five to their six for a team score of 30-27. Not having a body in three weights puts us at a disadvantage when it comes to winning duals.
“It’s like playing eleven-man football with only nine players.”
