The Boone Central/Newman Grove Lady Cardinals picked up steam at O’Neill Friday, then scored their best victory of the season Saturday, defeating Class C1 #10 Wayne (Lincoln Journal-Star) in Albion.
“It is time for us to get on a roll as we head for the stretch run,” Cardinal Coach Mike Kennedy said of his 8-4 squad.

Boone Central/Newman Grove did, indeed, roll Friday in a lopsided 59-23 victory at O’Neill. With Kaity Stuhr and Megan Nelson knocking down 3-pointers, the Cards raced to a 17-5 lead, then blew the game wide open with a 22-4 run in the second quarter.
“This was a great performance for our team. We defended with intelligence, urgency and intensity,” Kennedy praised. “I am very proud of our team for how hard they have worked to improve in a few specific areas.
“I believe this could be a turning point for our team.”

Boone Central/Newman Grove stepped up against a team that defeated the Cardinals in the recent holiday tournament Saturday and soundly thumped Wayne 50-38.
The Blue Devils got off to a strong start and took a 12-7 lead through one quarter, but consecutive 3-point bombs by Stuhr, Nelson and Gottier culminated an 18-2 Card blitz in the second quarter that turned a one-point mid-period deficit into a 25-14 halftime lead.
“This was our best game of the season so far. We showed great composure and confidence in this game,” Kennedy commented. “I am very pleased that we are defending so well without fouling. It has been a major push for us as an entire program.
“We outplayed a very good Wayne team in every facet of the game. I was especially pleased with having nine players score in the game, outrebounding Wayne by a margin of 34-31 and committing only 13 turnovers.”
