It’s not unusual for golfers to battle inclement weather conditions during Nebraska springs. So far, 2014 has been more difficult than usual, however.
With the start of the high school boys golf season looming, Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Dennis Walters noted his team, as of Monday, had only been able to get on the golf course twice for preseason practice. And forecasts for this week were looking no more promising.
Once they get a break from Mother Nature, Walters is anticipating a positive campaign for his team.
“I am looking for a good season this year. I think we should compete well,” said the veteran coach, in his sixth season at the Cardinal helm after a retirement break of four years. “We have four returning letterwinners and are adding three others with golf experience.”
That depth should make for some spirited competition to win varsity lineup positions.
Boone Central/Newman Grove can start with a nucleus of letterwinners Jackson Meyer (Sr.), Luke Johnson (Sr.), Parker Wallin (Jr.) and Joel Meyer (So.). Walters mentioned seniors Derek Gentrup and Tyler Hedlund, previous track and field performers, and junior Christian Ketteler as golfers who could contribute in 2014.
Boone Central/Newman Grove is scheduled to tee off its season Tuesday, April 8, with a dual at Ord, weather cooperating. The Cards head west again Friday, April 11, for the Ord Invitational.
