Cardinal golfers vie in tourneys

Jackson MeyerThe Boone Central/Newman Grove golf team faced a large and strong field of teams in the Lakeview Invitational at Elks Country Club (Columbus) Thursday, May 1.
The Cardinals placed 8th of 13 teams in the tournament with a score of 378. Scotus won the team title with a 345, just ahead of the Norfolk High JV (349), Elkhorn South (350) and Norfolk Catholic (351).
Senior Derek Gentrup led the Cards, finishing 22nd individually with a 44/46-90. Rounding out the BC/NG team total were Jackson Meyer (48/46-94), Joel Meyer (47/49-96), Tyler Hedlund (45/53-98) and Parker Wallin (47/53-100).

On the same day, the Boone Central/Newman Grove JV competed in the St. Francis Invite at Humphrey’s Steepleview Golf Course.
BC/NG finished 10th in the 11-team field with a 431. St. Francis won the meet by a comfortable margin at 343.
Luke Johnson medaled in the event, placing 13th with a steady 48/48-96. Other Cards competing were Nathan Gottier (54/52-106), Justin Rasmussen (59/55-114), Jared Zwiener (62/53-115) and Nathan Hemmer (56/67-123).
Boone Central/Newman Grove also hosted a pair of recent triangulars at the Albion Country Club.
BC/NG posted a nine-hole team score of 176 to top Fullerton (180) and Twin River (218) Friday, May 2. Gentrup fired a 40 to lead the way, supported by Jackson Meyer (43), Hedlund (45) and Joel Meyer (48).
BC/NG defeated Fullerton 209-216 in JV play. Johnson led all JV golfers with a 46 and Gottier added a 52.
The Cardinals had one of their best scores of the season in a nine-hole triangular Monday, shooting 169 to defeat Spalding/Spalding Academy (185) and Elgin/Pope John (197).
Hedlund led all golfers with a strong 39. Gentrup (42), Wallin (43) and Jackson Meyer (45) rounded out the team score.
John Bernt and Mark Kasperbauer each fired 44 for S/SA. Brandon Stevens added a 48 and Byron Bauer shot 49.
S/SA edged BC/NG in the JV competition, 218-224. Weston Pfeifer led the Knights with a 48. Gottier, Zwiener and Jacob Atwood all shot 55 for the hosts. Johnson had a 59 and Hemmer a 61.
