Decoration Day program features Chief Standing Bear

Joe Starita“If you don’t know where you are, you don’t know who you are.”
Author Joe Starita used that quote from American writer Wendell Berry to preface the discussion of his book, I Am a Man: Chief Standing Bear’s Journey for Justice.
The book chronicles the efforts of Ponca Chief Standing Bear to bring the body of his son, Bear Shield, back to the tribe’s Nebraska homeland for burial in 1879.
Starita spoke to an audience of about 70 during the third annual Decoration Day program sponsored by the Boone County Historical Society on Monday, May 26, at Fuller Park and the Boone County Museum.
