BC/NG nipped in softball opener

It was a wild opener for the Boone Central/Newman Grove softball team.
The Cardinals fell behind visiting North Bend Central early, then could not quite complete a valiant rally in an 11-10 loss to the Tigers.

“Our girls showed a tremendous amount of heart throughout the game,” noted first-year Cardinal Coach Danielle Amen. “After getting the first-game jitters out of the way in the first three innings, their bats came alive and they battled back to make it a very intense game down to the final inning.”
BC/NG was certainly at a bit of a disadvantage entering the contest. Having a young team anyway, the Cardinals had several games wiped out by weather prior to Thursday while many area teams were playing four times or more.
That tardy start seemed to have an effect early as North Bend jumped out to leads of 2-0, 6-2 and 9-5 in the first three innings.
The Cardinals began to limit North Bend’s attack as the game progressed, pulling within 10-7 in the fourth and trailing 11-7 after five. BC/NG held the Tigers scoreless in the final two frames and added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, but could not push across the tieing score.
