After a strong start in their own Boone Central Invitational a week earlier, the Boone Central/Newman Grove cross country teams kept their impressive early momentum rolling forward at Friday’s Norfolk Catholic Invite.
The Lady Cardinals, despite top runner Catherine Weeder missing varsity competition due to illness, placed third – just three points back of runner-up Norfolk Catholic. The BC/NG boys improved on their Boone Central Invite finish by placing fourth in the 13-team field at Norfolk.
The performances again drew praise from veteran Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey.
“We had a really nice meet!” Dickey exclaimed. “Even though we’ve had some sickness running through the team, we really stepped up another step on Friday. We seemed to relax a bit and be a bit more patient during the race, so things went well.”
Kendra Gonzalez led the Cards with a seventh-place finish in a personal-best time of 21:34. Sheldon Beierman placed 10th in 21:48 and Christina Stopak also recorded a personal-best of 21:55 placing 12th.
Andrew Rasmussen was the Cardinal boys leader for the second straight week, placing eighth in 18:24. Cody Shanno (17th, 19:07) and Thomas Hosford (19th, 19:15) also nailed down top 20 places.
