The Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team finished a hectic week of early-season action on a high note, placing second at the Central City Invitational Saturday.
The Cardinals went 1-2 in home matches against Crofton, Stanton and Norfolk Catholic earlier in the week and their 2-1 performance at Central City boosted BC/NG’s season record to 5-6.
Coach Susan Roberts feels it’s a sign of better things to come.
“The girls played really well to close out the week,” Roberts acknowledged. “We look forward to taking that high level of execution into our upcoming matches.
“This group just keeps getting better and better with every match. I’m proud of their effort and commitment. They’ve been focused in practice on making corrections and working to get better, and it’s showing in our matches.”
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened the Saturday tournament with a 25-9, 25-13 victory over Lexington, hitting at .245 efficiency. A 25-13, 25-20 win over host Central City, keyed by 94 percent serving and 97 percent serve receive, set up a final match vs. Hastings, which the Cardinals dropped 20-25, 19-25.
“We played very efficiently in our first two matches, making very few serving and attacking errors,” Roberts noted. “This has been something we’ve really been focusing on. In several earlier losses, we know we hurt ourselves too often and didn’t make our opponent earn its own points.
“Our goal was to have good ball control, make smarter plays and execute better. As a whole, we did that throughout the tournament.”
