The Boone Central/Newman Grove bats emerged from a recent slumber Saturday, allowing the Cardinals to pick up their second victory of the 2014 softball season.
After scoring just two runs in three games during the past week, BC/NG plated two in an 8-2 loss to Aurora, opening the GINW tournament with eight hits. The Cards tied the game at 2-2 in the third when Jaclyn Frey cracked a two-run double, but Aurora scored three in the fourth, two in the fifth and a final run in the sixth to earn the win.
Offensive production continued to improve against Adams Central, but Cardinal pitching could not keep the Patriots from pounding out an 18-7 win.
Adams Central went ahead 6-2 with a six-run third inning, then piled on four in the fourth and seven in the fifth to break the contest open. BC/NG enjoyed a five-run burst in the fifth, keyed by Taylor Olnes’ two-run double.
Perseverance paid off in the final game of the day, as Boone Central/Newman Grove (2-12) defeated Chase County 12-4 in five innings.
Trailing 4-2, BC/NG rallied with five runs in the third inning behind a run-scoring single by Olnes and RBI double by Frey. The Cardinals secured the decision by tacking on three in the fourth and a pair in the fifth.
