Boone Central/Newman Grove used an early flurry of runs, then withstood an attempted rally by Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay H.F. to pick up its third softball win of the season Monday night at the Albion Sports Complex in a game suspended earlier in the year by rain.
The Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, had a four-run burst in inning two and added their final tally in the third. Madison/Humphrey/LHF chipped away at the Card lead, but fell short against BC/NG pitcher Niki Mewhirter and solid Cardinal defense. The visitors outhit BC/NG 7-4, but stranded 10 baserunners.
In a pair of regularly-scheduled triangular contests also played Monday, Boone Central/Newman Grove (3-19) was defeated 17-4 by Madison/Humphrey/LHF and 11-1 by Twin River.
Madison/Humphrey/LHF didn’t squander its scoring opportunities in this one, parlaying six hits and six walks with six BC/NG errors to rack up 17 runs. The Dragons took an 8-2 first-inning lead and added seven runs in the sixth inning.
Boone Central/Newman Grove ran into tough pitching against Twin River and couldn’t keep pace when the Titans scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Tera Paczosa held the Cardinals to a single run on three hits, striking out three.
