Kyncl swings way back to state golf

Boone Central senior Melissa Kyncl returned to the Class C Girls State Golf Championships this week after placing second in the C-2 District tournament Oct. 7 at Indianhead Golf Course in Grand Island.
Kyncl was the district champion in 2013, then struggled in cold, windy weather to finish 23rd in the state tourney field.
Last Tuesday, she missed a second consecutive district gold medal by a single stroke and was hoping to reverse her state fortunes at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus Monday and Tuesday.

Nieve Johnson of Scotus shot a closing 42 after going out in 45 on her front nine, claiming first with an 87. Kyncl was tied with Lakeview rival Kelsey Bignell, the 2014 Albion Invite champ, after opening 42’s, but the Cardinal senior slipped to 46 on the back side and finished second at 88.

Boone Central finished sixth in the 10-team district field with a score of 470. Kyley Sorell placed 19th with a 54/56-110, while Hannah Groth (62/59-121) and Lyndsey Figgner (76/75-151) rounded out the team total.
