Card cross country runners charge to state

Another harrowing competition, another outstanding performance by the Boone Central/Newman Grove cross country runners.
It has been one exciting stretch run to the 2014 season for the Cardinals.
The BC/NG girls were runners-up to Wayne Thursday in the C-2 District at the Wayne Country Club and Cardinals Andrew Rasmussen and Cody Shanno also qualified for the state championships, as the boys team placed a competitive 5th.

“I was really excited to see how this meet would turn out,” said Card Coach Tom Dickey. “It was so close in so many ways, with an extraordinary number of teams involved (in the outcome).
With Sheldon Beierman leading a charge that saw four BC/NG runners place in the Top 10, and a fifth take 11th, the Lady Cardinals fell just shy of Wayne, 24-28, in the quest for a district title.
“The girls had to dig out of a huge hole when the top Wayne girls finished 1-2-3, but they did everything they could possibly do,” Dickey praised. “Our pack got even tighter than last week, with only 19 seconds separating our top four runners. Frankly, I didn’t think anyone could beat us with a grouping that close.”

The BC/NG boys were impressive in their own right, falling just three points shy of securing team qualification for the state meet.
“The boys had to overcome an extremely fast early pace,” Dickey noted. “Andrew stayed right in it until the last 1,500 meters. His legs just couldn’t handle it anymore, but he hung on for 10th. Cody ran possibly his most impressive race ever.”
