Isaac Sullivan won his first high school varsity tournament championship and the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals placed sixth in a tough O’Neill Invitational Saturday, despite getting a late practice start for the 2014-15 season.
Sullivan pinned both of his opponents in the heavyweight division to earn gold. Nolan Wondercheck, Joel Meyer and Andrew Rasmussen each placed fourth as BC/NG scored 60 points, finishing smack dab in the middle of the 11-team field.
Host O’Neill won the tourney title with 201 points, chased by Valentine (191.5).
“With most of our guys having only a week of practice under their belts, compared to three weeks for the rest of the teams, we didn’t expect to be at the top of our game, but did plan to show better than we did,” said Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge.
