Four Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals earned medals this past Friday and Saturday in the 43rd High Plains Invitational, annually one of the biggest, strongest wrestling meets in Central Nebraska.
Junior Isaac Sullivan, who earlier this season won his first high school varsity tournament championship, paced the Cards with a third-place performance at 285 pounds. Boone Central/Newman Grove placed 13th in the 21-team event.
“As it always is, this was once again a very competitive meet, with several top-ten ranked teams and individuals,” commented Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Dale Bonge. “With 21 teams and only eight individuals in each weight class making it to the second day, you have to bring your ‘A game’ to survive. Four of our guys managed to do that.”
Along with Sullivan, Cody Shanno garnered a sixth-place medal, while Jacob Krings and Andy King both finished seventh.
While his Cardinals battled against tough competition, Bonge left the tournament knowing his team has work to do and improvement to make.
“There were too many matches we had opportunities to win, but could not finish the deal.”
