Boone Central/Newman Grove finished in the middle of the Mid State Conference wrestling tournament field Saturday at Norfolk Catholic High School, one of four teams to top the 100 point mark.
Although the Cardinals’ 111 point total trailed O’Neill (196), Battle Creek (186) and Norfolk Catholic (148) by sizeable margins, it put BC/NG well in front of the remainder of conference teams, Crofton placing fifth with just 63.5 points.
Card Coach Dale Bonge felt it showed progress by his team at the right time of the season.
“One week ago in our tournament (Boone Central Invite), we finished behind Pierce by half a point. This week we outscore them by 61,” Bonge noted. “Our young men did that without the services of some of our regular varsity line-up wrestlers, who missed the meet trying to heal up for districts.
“I believe that looks like improvement. But, while we did wrestle better than last week, we still have some tweaking to do before district this coming weekend.”
Cardinal freshman Ty Groth won his first conference gold medal in the 106-pound weight class to pace BC/NG. Isaac Sullivan (285) was a runner-up and Joel Meyer (138) placed third.
