Cards qualify four for state wrestling championships

Others are heartbroken.
For all, emotions run high at the annual district wrestling tournament.
Four Cardinals – senior Cody Shanno and juniors Joel Meyer, Jacob Krings and Isaac Sullivan – finished with the elated feeling in the B3 District at Aurora this past weekend, qualifying for the 2015 Nebraska State Wrestling Championships Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 19-21) at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center.

“District is almost always bittersweet. We’re happy for the guys who move on to state, but disappointed for those who do not,” said Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “Coming into the meet, we knew it was going to be tough for every one of our guys to advance to Omaha. Only the top four placewinners in each weight class qualify.
“We only had two guys predicted to place that high – Isaac at 3rd seed and Joel at 4th. Many of the rest of the wrestlers were predicted to be just out of the money – Cody and Jacob 5th, Ty (Groth), Nolan (Wondercheck) and Steven (Arreguin) 6th.
“Fortunately, for us, Joel lived up to his seed, while Isaac, Jacob and Cody exceeded their seeds by one spot each to qualify that foursome for state.”
As usual, Bonge noted there were highlights and heartbreaks for the Cardinals during B3 action.
