A week that began with a thud concluded with a Boone Central/Newman Grove bang, as the Cardinal volleyball team swept to the championship of the Central City Invite Saturday.
BC/NG posted victories over Holdrege (2-0), Adams Central (2-1) and Hastings High (2-0) to earn the title and improve its season record to 6-5.

“We had a great day at Central City,” praised Cardinal Coach Susan Roberts. “Overall, we played with good control, limited our unforced errors and stayed focused throughout our matches.
“We really relied on our steady serve receive in all three matches and attacked the ball more aggressively than we had earlier in the week. We’ve been working on speeding up our attack and improving our blocking and overall defense, and I felt like we saw that put into action.
“I’m really proud of the poise I saw in some high-pressure situations, and in our overall attitude and effort all day.”

Elissa Slizoski led a balanced Cardinal attack with nine kills in an opening 25-16, 25-20 win over Holdrege.
Slizoski again notched nine kills as BC/NG rallied to defeat Adams Central 14-25, 25-19, 25-23.
Boone Central/Newman Grove wrapped up the championship with a 25-20, 27-25 decision over Hastings, led by Slizoski’s 13 kills and six digs.
