After winning the Central City Invite a week earlier, the Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team followed up with another strong tournament performance Saturday, placing third in the Adams Central Invitational at Hastings.
Boone Central/Newman Grove (9-7) opened with a win over Doniphan-Trumbull, dropped a three-set dogfight to Sandy Creek, and defeated Fillmore Central.
“We had another great day Saturday,” acknowledged Card Coach Susan Roberts. “We executed really well all-around against Doniphan-Trumbull. We allowed them to stay close in set three with a few more hitting and service errors than we’d had in the previous set, but the girls held on and executed well with a block and a kill to close out the match.
“Our second game was a real battle, constantly back-and-forth, as can be seen by the scores. We came up just short due, in part, to a slight decrease in our attack and serve efficiency. We had opportunities to close out the game and just couldn’t get the ball to the floor. I was really proud of our fight and determination – we were down 21-24 in set three, came back to tie, and even earned two of our own match points, but couldn’t close it out.
“We did take care of business in our final match. We had moments of poor execution, but the girls did a good job focusing and executed well down the stretch in both sets.”
