A week of volleyball that began in disappointing fashion ended on a high note, as the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals defeated host Battle Creek Thursday night.
The performance left BC/NG Coach Susan Roberts feeling better about her teams’ efforts after the Cardinals dropped freshmen, JV and varsity matches at C1 #1 Ord Tuesday.
“All three teams got back on track Thursday night after disappointing performances at Ord,” Roberts acknowledged. “Tuesday, we struggled to control our errors at all three levels, be it service errors or attacking errors. Against a fundamentally sound and athletic team like Ord, you can’t afford to make too many mistakes. We were disappointed because we felt we could have challenged them more and played more competitively.”
That was remedied to a large degree at Battle Creek, where the Cardinal varsity notched a 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 sweep over the Bravettes. The BC/NG JV lost a tough, hard-fought 27-29, 23-25 battle, but the Card freshmen brought home a 25-22, 25-18 victory.
“We came out with more intensity and better execution in all three matches,” Roberts said. “The varsity continued passing the ball well and, this time, we were able to get our attack going. We really limited our unforced errors and played great defense.”
