The Boone Central/Newman Grove Lady Cardinals won a second straight district championship Thursday at Hastings’ Elks Country Club and earned their opportunity to repeat as Class C state champions.
The BC/NG girls will be joined at the state championships in Kearney by junior Thomas Hosford, who qualified by placing 13th in the C-3 District boys race.
It proved to be the day Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey had hoped for, although there were also a few disappointments for runners who narrowly missed state qualification.

“We had a really good day at Hastings,” Dickey acknowledged. “I knew if we ran our normal races, we’d be OK – and that’s exactly what we did.
“The girls ran a really confident race and put some good space between themselves and a really good Adams Central team. We had some very good individual races.
“The boys ran a very good race, as well,” Dickey noted. “They all felt they went out a bit hard, which resulted in some struggles late in the race. I really appreciated their desire to do something special, however.”

The 2015 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships will be held Friday at the Kearney Country Club. The Class C girls race will begin at noon, with the Class C boys running at 1 p.m.
