BC/NG wrestlers bring home runner-up trophy

Boone Central/Newman Grove began the 2015-16 wrestling season in impressive fashion by placing second in the annual O’Neill Invitational Saturday, albeit a distant second to a powerful Valentine squad.
The Badgers ran away with the team title, scoring 241.5 points. BC/NG tallied 119 to edge Chamberlain, SD (116) and West Holt (113) for runner-up honors.

“Valentine has a strong team from top to bottom, with a lot of depth. They had multiple entries in half the weights, took home 8 of 14 gold medals, and had multiple placewinners at two weights,” commented Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Dale Bonge. “With their quality and depth, they will be one of the favorites to win state in Class C.
“The battle for second place was tight all day. We had medalists in seven weight classes, led by a solid showing by our six seniors, who all medaled. Bonus points were a key factor in finishing second.
“While we were pleased to bring home the runner-up trophy, there were several places where we missed opportunities to get a few more wins or move people up on the awards stand.”
The Cardinals were paced by two individual runners-up – Nolan Wondercheck and Joel Meyer – and a pair of third-place medalists – Steven Arreguin and Isaac Sullivan.
