Boone Central/Newman Grove sent its 9th through 11th grade wrestlers to battle some stout varsity and junior varsity competition Saturday, placing third in the team standings of the Newman Grove Invitational tournament.
Logan View (235.5) won the tourney title ahead of the Norfolk High JV (215.5), while BC/NG (111) edged the Fremont High JV (105) for third. Fullerton (91) rounded out the top five in the 11-team event.
Tyson Haddix was the Cardinals’ lone champion at 106 pounds. Trey Schafer and Jesse Osantowski each captured second place and Ethan Dozler took third.
All in all, Boone Central/Newman Grove Coach Dale Bonge said it was “a respectable showing for our freshmen through juniors.”
“In the past, we have entered our JV team at Newman Grove, but a new rule change allowed teams to gain another tournament, so we chose to enter our 9-11 wrestlers,” Bonge commented. “Tyson was our lone champ, with a pair of first-period pins and a tight win in the finals. Tyson had a rough start to the season with three straight losses, but has come on strong since and won nine of his last 11 matches.
“Trey had arguably the toughest bracket of the meet, with 11 wrestlers possessing winning records. Jesse stormed the finals with a pair of pins.”
