SheriffA 31-year-old Elgin man allegedly took his own life Thursday evening, May 5, in the Boone County Jail.
According to Boone County Attorney Jim Ely, Kadence Q. Steele, of 208 South Second Street, Elgin, was found unconscious and unresponsive in his jail cell, at approximately 7:43 p.m.
Ely said a Boone County dispatcher discovered Steele and two jail employees initiated CPR.
“A preliminary autopsy report indicated cause of death by hanging,” Ely said.
Steele was transported by Albion Rescue to the Boone County Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Steele was one of three men, all with ties to Elgin, who were arrested in April in connection with the theft of a welder and other property from a swine nursery in Boone County near Spalding.
