Gov. Pete Ricketts declared Tuesday, July 5, as National Guard Sgt. Calvin Koziol Day.
The 21-year-old Albion native won the national Best Warrior competition in June, earning him the title of National Guard Soldier of the Year. He was the first Nebraska National Guard soldier to win the competition.
The three-day contest was held at Camp Edwards, Mass. It included a 14-mile road march and many tests of military skills. Koziol won both state and regional competitions to qualify for the national contest, where he competed against the top two National Guard soldiers from each of seven regions.
Sgt. Koziol is a 2013 graduate of Boone Central High School and the son of John and Rhonda Koziol of rural Albion.
