Rainy weather added mud to the usual sweat and blood at the 2016 Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride, but it couldn’t dampen the excitement and entertainment of one of Albion’s most anticipated annual summer events.
Although seating was not jam-packed, as usual, there was still a large crowd who braved the wet conditions and cheered on more than 30 cowboys vieing for the 2016 Gateway to the Sandhills championship.
At the conclusion of all the ups and downs, thrills and spills, it was Kyle Ziegler of Atwood, KS who claimed the night’s best ride and the rights to the winner’s purse and coveted championship belt buckle.
Ziegler became the 22nd Gateway to the Sandhills Bullride champion with a score of 83 – just a single point ahead of Dustin Olmstead of Hopkinton, IA.
Rounding out the top placers in Saturday’s competition were Chase Hamlin of Hoyt, KS (3rd, 77 pts), Brett Olmstead of Hopkinton, IA (4th, 74 pts), Matt Powers of Woodbine, IA (5th, 59 pts) and Randy Else of Weston, NE (6th, 58 pts).
