Stopak leads Card runners to 1st place

On a soggy day in Norfolk, a young Boone Central/Newman Grove girls cross country team may have surprised some people.
The Cardinals, led by medalist runnerup Christina Stopak, charged to the championship of the Norfolk Catholic Invitational Friday, 10 points in front of the host Knights.
BC/NG, in fact, surprised veteran Coach Tom Dickey.
“This turned out to be a wonderful meet for us. I have to admit, that minutes before we ran, I wasn’t thinking that way!” Dickey said. “The rainy weather made me wonder if we were at all prepared for the conditions or the competition.
“But, as soon as the girls came through the first 1,000 meters, I knew I was wrong. Everyone seemed to have fun competing. We saw some excellent improvement in times, and also in teamwork.”
Stopak followed her strong season debut in the Boone Central Invitational with a personal best time of 21:12 at Norfolk, lowering the second-best Cardinal clocking all-time. Katie Goodwater also ran a personal best (22:06), placing 5th, and Emma Arndts took 8th in 22:56.
Thomas Hosford led the BC/NG boys, who finished 7th in the team standings, with a time of 19:47 and 22nd place finish. Three other Cardinals recorded personal best times in the boys race.
