Friday was a tough, tough day for cross country runners.
Even with the unseasonably hot, windy conditions, Christina Stopak and the Boone Central/Newman Grove girls continued their 2016 success, however, placing second in the Boone Central Individual Invitational at the Albion Country Club.
Stopak was second overall in the girls race, and the top senior runner, with a time of 20:32, leading the Lady Cards to a runner-up team finish behind Scotus. Katie Goodwater (6th) and Emma Arndts (10th) also finished in the girls’ top ten.
“The BC Individual was a ‘majorly’ tough meet,” stressed Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey. “There were a ton of kids competing – 17 complete boys teams! – and the weather was just plain bad for running and competing.
“The relative lack of personal best times proves the difficulties with the heat and wind. I was pleased with the effort, but concerned a bit by the results. I’m confident, though, that this tough race will make us better.”
In the huge boys field, Boone Central/Newman Grove finished 10th, with senior Thomas Hosford (23rd, 18:54) leading the Cardinals.
