Hog confinement applications were withdrawn Nov. 23

Applications for conditional use permits to allow two hog confinements near Petersburg were withdrawn after the public hearing last week.
In a Nov. 23 letter to Boone County Zoning Administrator Mary Ziemba, Darrell Hunt of New Modern Concepts stated that Iowa Select Farms “hereby withdraws the conditional use permit applications recently submitted by Oakland Farms, LLC” for the two Class I livestock feeding operations proposed for construction west and southwest of Petersburg.
Hunt’s letter continued with the following statement: “We were unaware of the history of the previous landowner. The events described at the public hearing clearly do not align with our values of animal care and well-being. We apologize for any inconvenience or concern that this situation caused the Boone County Planning nad Zoning Commissioners and the greater members of the Petersburg community.”
Hunt said the companies remain committed to growing their operations in Nebraska, and “wish to ask the local landowners of Boone County — or surrounding counties — for any help in identifying agricultural areas better suited for our two swine farms.”
Hunt’s letter concluded: “We can all agree livestock growth in rural counties brings tremendous economic benefits to rural communities, as well as the opportunity for crop nutrients for area farmers.”
