The Boone Central/Newman Grove golf team hosted the 2017 Boone Central Invitational Thursday at the Albion Country Club, finished mid-pack in the team standings with one individual medalist.
Senior Nathan Gottier led the 5th place Cardinals, taking 14th in the overall 53-player field with an 18-hole score of 91.
Ord edged Battle Creek 344-348 to win the team championship, followed by Norfolk Catholic (351), Schuyler (383) and Boone Central/Newman Grove (383). Riverside (426) finished 9th and the BC/NG JV 10th (449) among the 11 competing teams.
Battle Creek’s Caydon McCracken was the only player to break the 80 mark, winning the tournament’s gold medal with a 79. Tanner Bundy and Caden Johnson of Ord both fired 85s to place 2nd and 3rd. Jarret Cerny and Trey Colton of Norfolk Catholic and Fullerton’s Chase Ostransky also shot rounds of 85.
Gottier was consistent through the day, recording a 45 on his initial nine holes and finishing with a 46 on his second round. Bryton Fowlkes (94) and Garrett Cornwell (95) finished 19th and 20th for the Cardinals. Fowlkes rallied with 45 after a first-round 49, while Cornwell opened with a 44, but faded to a 51 on his back nine.
Kade Noble paced the Boone Central/Newman Grove JV with a 103 and Garret Niewohner shot 104.
Riverside’s leader in Thursday’s competition was Joseph Bloom, who combined rounds of 48 for a 96 total (22nd in the overall field). Daniel Lozano added a score of 100 for the Chargers.
The tourney followed a Tuesday quad, hosted by BC/NG at the Albion course. The Cardinals topped Fullerton, Twin River and Riverside in the meet. Fullerton’s Ostransky (40) had the low round of the day and Gottier shot a 44.
