Cardinal athletes sharpen skills in tough Gee Invite

The Northwest-Dave Gee Invitational is annually one of the toughest the Boone Central/Newman Grove track & field team attends each year, and 2017 was no exception.
With perennial track/field powerhouses like Northwest and Aurora, plus talented individuals from other schools, the meet gives Cardinal athletes a barometer of the performance level needed for upcoming conference and district competition.
Boone Central/Newman Grove did not have any event winners while placing 8th in the team standings, but did a number of placing efforts, including runner-up finishes by Jenna Kramer (high jump) and Jessie Sullivan (discus), and many athletes who posted season-best times and marks.
“Our boys’ throwers had a really strong day, filled with a lot of personal bests,” said Cardinal Coach Justin DeWitt. “Jessie Sullivan improved his shot put and discus marks, Dalton Wagner improved in the discus, and Jon Merten improved by over 16 feet in the discus.
“The distance runners have been working hard with Coach Dickey, and they were our other area of strength. Jose Mario (Clemente), Scott (Wright), and Katie (Goodwater) all improved their 1600 times. Scott, Chris (Preister) and Katie improved their 3200 times, while Katie (Daniels) and Autumn (Farmer) improved their 800 times.”
Several of the top Card performances on the day were by Sullivan in the discus (2nd, 154’3), Kramer in the high jump (2nd, 4’10), Sullivan in the shot put (3rd, 51’1½) and Cody Nelson in the high jump (3rd, 5’6). BC/NG’s girls’ 4×100 meter relay team of Lauren and Tessa Hedlund, Kramer and Niah Kahlandt also placed 3rd in the time of 53.95.
