Four properties in Albion were declared nuisances by the Albion City Council during its monthly meeting Tuesday night, June 12.
After hearing a report from police officer Mike Mapel, and reviewing written reports, the council adopted a resolution declaring the following properties to be nuisances:
• 631 West Main Street
• 346 North Seventh Street
• 217 North Sixth Street
• 236 North Seventh Street
Officer Mapel told the council that several other properties are under review and may be declared nuisances. Tall grass and weeds are the main issues, he said.
The property owners have 30 days to abate the nuisances. If not abated, the city could initiate the abatement and assess the cost to the properties.
The council discussed possible changes in the city code that would allow the Police Department to address tall grass and weeds on a citation basis, shortening the time allowed for abatement to 10 days.
Also, the council may review the city’s charges for abatement and fines associated with nuisance ordinance violations.
