Off and flying.
Boone Central/Newman Grove officially started the 2018 fall sports campaign with a 4-3 softball victory over Highway 91 Monday night at the Albion Sports Complex.
The Cardinals took an early lead in the contest on Lauren Hedlund’s first-inning home run, then tallied the winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Anna Hamling doubled and Claire Choat tripled to score pinch runner Avery Olnes.
“It was a great way to start the season. Our girls never got flustered and kept battling the entire game,” praised Card Coach Danielle Amen. “Getting a win under our belts and those first game jitters out of the way, the girls can continue to build from here.”
Hedlund provided early fireworks on a cool, breezy night, blasting a solo shot over the right centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Groeteke walked later in the inning and made it 2-0 on a single by Brooke Groth.
The teams seesawed from there. Highway 91 scored single runs in the second and third innings to forge a tie, BC/NG edged ahead with a run in the fourth and the Cyclones again knotted the contest by scoring in the fifth.
That set up the sixth-inning heroics, Hamling setting the table with her double and Choat finishing a 3-for-3 night with the dramatic triple and winning RBI.
