An elusive quarterback and an opportunistic, bend-but-don’t-break defense were more than the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals could overcome Friday night.
The host Ord Chanticleers got 180 rushing yards and three touchdowns from QB Jesse Ulrich and twice shut down Boone Central/Newman Grove drives inside the Chant 10-yard line to spearhead a 41-13 victory in week two of the high school football season.
“Last week was a team win. This week we were inconsistent in all three phases of the game,” said Cardinal Coach Mark Hudson. “Our lack of depth was an issue on a very humid night, and the second quarter was the difference.
“The second half was an even game, but we came up short on our two trips inside the ten and they capitalized on their drives. Their quarterback was a very good runner and extended a lot of plays with his feet. Their defense did a good job and forced us into being one-dimensional.
“We will learn from our mistakes and go back to work this week.”
